Begum Rokeya Day is today (December 9). The day will be celebrated through various programs. Special leaflets, posters, booklets and souvenirs are being released on the occasion of the day. The President gave a separate message. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

As part of the programme, five women of the country are getting ‘Rokeya Padak’ for their contribution in various fields of society. On this day, the recipients of Begum Rokeya Medal-2021 will be present at Osmani Smriti Auditorium in the capital to receive the medal from the Prime Minister.

Begum Rokeya Padak is awarded every year on December 9 for the outstanding achievements of women in various fields of society in keeping with the work and ideals of Begum Rokeya, the pioneer of women’s awakening.

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was born on December 9, 1880 in Payaraband village of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district. At that time there was no practice of teaching education to girls in the Muslim society. So despite not having formal education, he learned to read and write Urdu, Bengali, Arabic and Farsi from his elder brother in secret of the family. His brother and elder sister played a significant role in shaping his education and values in his life. Later married to Syed Sakhawat Hussain in Bhagalpur, Bihar. With the encouragement of her husband and her own interest, she expanded her education. Begum Rokeya died on 9 December 1932.
