The government has given in-principle approval to the draft ‘Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2023’, bringing several important changes including shortening the election period, reducing leave of councillors.

This approval was given in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (October 9). Earlier in the morning, a cabinet meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s office. At the end of the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary in the briefing at the Secretariat. Mahbub Hossain informed this information.

He also said that instead of the current post of ‘Secretary’ in the City Corporation, there will be an ‘Executive Officer’. Councilors could enjoy leave for three months. Now it has been reduced to one month. If the councilor of a ward is out of the country, earlier the councilor of the neighboring ward would perform the duty, now the reserved commissioner will perform the duty. Elections were to be held within six months of the end of the term of the corporation. Now it has to be done within three months. First meeting to be held within 15 working days of taking oath.

The Cabinet Secretary said that if a person or owner does not clean a road or a pond on his own initiative, he can be fined. City Corporation will give instructions for this. Failure to follow instructions will result in fines. The city corporation will do the rain water drainage. Earlier it was the work of WASA.
