Accused cannot be hanged except top terrorists and criminals: High Court

The High Court has ordered that other than the top terrorists, militants and violent convicts, the accused cannot be put under arrest. Also, the High Court issued a ruling asking that teaching Dandaberi in large numbers is not illegal.

A High Court bench headed by Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam gave the order on Tuesday (January 30). It has been asked to strictly follow the circular of the Ministry of Home Affairs in this regard.

Barrister Kaiser Kamal brought to the attention of the High Court that a Chhatra Dal leader was brought to the funeral of his father on January 15. On that day, the court suggested a writ in this regard. Later, on January 16, a writ was filed challenging the fact that a Chhatra Dal leader was brought to his father’s funeral. In the writ, it is demanded to stop the wearing of dandaberi on a mass basis in all prisons of the country.

On January 13, the news was published in the media under the title of ‘Chhatra Dal leader who performed father’s funeral on foot.’

According to the published report, after being released on parole, Chhatra Dal leader Md. Nazmul Mridha. Due to the shortness of time, a special funeral was organized before the scheduled funeral. The funeral was held at Paschim Subidkhali village of Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali at around three o’clock last Saturday. During the funeral, Nazmul’s handcuffs were untied but the leg shackles were not untied. Md. Nazmul Mridha is the joint convener of Mirzaganj Upazila Chhatra Dal of Patuakhali. After the funeral, the police sent him to Patuakhali District Jail.
