Shaheed Hossain Suhrawardy’s 60th death anniversary today. He breathed his last on December 5, 1963 in a hotel room in Beirut, Lebanon.

On the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their respects to his memory in separate messages. The President said in his speech, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy is a shining star in the history of politics and democracy in the subcontinent.

In his speech, the Prime Minister said, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy’s life and ideals always give us courage and motivation for the progress of democracy and the welfare of people. Nation will always remember the contribution of this great leader with respect. Like every year, this year also various organizations including Awami League are celebrating the day through various programs. On behalf of Awami League, at 9 in the morning at the shrine of the deceased, Fateha reading and prayer program has been taken.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in a statement urged the leaders and activists of the party and allied organizations to observe the death anniversary of Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy with due dignity.

Jatiya Party-JP Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju gave the message.

Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy was born on 8 September 1892 in Medinipur, West Bengal. He is the youngest child of Sir Zahid Suhrawardy, a famous judge of Calcutta High Court. Shaheed Suhrawardy led the pro-democracy people’s movement against Pakistan’s military dictatorship. Since the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, he played a protest role against the dictatorship of the Muslim League government. Due to his respect for democratic norms and public opinion, Sudhisamaj called him the ‘son of democracy’.
