Heavy rain kills 21 in Dominican Republic

At least 21 people have died after tunnel collapses and other accidents in the Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic due to heavy rains. This information was reported in a report of the British media BBC on Monday (November 20).

According to the report, flash floods have occurred due to heavy rains in the country. Apart from this, electricity connection was cut and bridges and roads were damaged. Thousands of people have been displaced. More than 13,000 people have been evacuated to safer places after heavy rains.

9 people lost their lives when a highway tunnel collapsed in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic due to heavy rain. Apart from this, 12 more people lost their lives in accidents at different places. Three children were also among the dead.

According to the Emergency Operations Center, more than 2,500 people have been rescued and about 2,600 houses have been damaged by the storm.

Meanwhile, among the dead, four are US citizens and three are citizens of neighboring Haiti, according to an AFP report.

The country’s president, Luis Abinade, called it the “worst rainfall event” in the country’s history after heavy storms for the past 48 hours. He said that all classes will be closed in the country till next Wednesday.
