800 earthquakes in 24 hours, state of emergency in Iceland

International Desk, The CNN :

Iceland declared a state of emergency after a series of strong earthquakes. Local time on Friday (November 10) this earthquake was continuously felt in the Reykjavík peninsula in the southwestern part of the country. The Icelandic Met Office IMO is predicting a possible volcanic eruption.

The country’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said the police chief declared a state of emergency due to the strong earthquake in Sundhanjukagiga, north of Grindavik. About 800 earthquakes were felt on the peninsula by midnight on Friday. Police have closed the north-south road in Grindavik after it was damaged by the earthquake.

Two strong earthquakes were felt about 40 kilometers from Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, and along much of the country’s southern coast. The magnitude of the major earthquake was 5.2 on the Richter scale.

Authorities have warned that there is a risk of an earthquake stronger than the earthquakes that have occurred so far. If this phenomenon continues, an eruption may occur.

Meanwhile, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) said that the eruption may occur within a few days. According to the agency, around 24,000 earthquakes have been recorded in the region since the end of last October. The authorities also said that they plan to evacuate the residents of Grindavik if such a situation arises.
